Rock Coring

RD-n-P Drilling, Inc. is experienced in both NX (2.9” OD) and HQ (3.7” OD) coring.  We have the ability and expertise to core either conventional or wireline to several hundred feet.

Conventional Coring

Conventional coring consists of a core barrel attached to drill rods (AW-1 ¼ OD or NW-2” OD) that cores 10 ft. per run.  The barrel is then pulled and disassembled to retrieve the rock.  You then re-assemble the barrel and continue.

Wireline coring

Wireline coring consists of a core barrel that uses rods of the same diameter to core 10 ft. per run.  The main difference is a winch cable, or “wireline”, with a retrieval latch is lowered down the casing to retrieve just the inner barrel containing the rock sample instead of pulling the entire tool string.  This allows for much more efficient operation when obtaining more than just 20 ft. of core per hole.

We have 500 ft. of NX and over 1000 ft. of HQ wireline in our inventory.  Our experience has had us drill to depths of 700 ft. vertically as well as 500 ft. on the angle (30° and 45°) on not only land but on barges in lakes and rivers throughout the Midwest.

Core Recovery

RD-n-P has an excellent and proven track record of superior core recovery utilizing not only conventional and wireline techniques but also specialized tooling such as triple tube and split barrel recovery methods.
